The energy-efficiency decision that matters for continuous-duty fans.
If a duct fan runs all day, the motor type is the difference between a quiet, efficient system and a running cost you feel every month. This guide explains the choice.
An EC (electronically commutated) motor is a brushless DC motor with built-in electronics that control speed efficiently. Compared with a basic AC motor, it uses less energy at the same airflow, runs cooler and quieter, and allows smooth speed control.

For a fan that runs continuously — ventilation in a plant room, a 24/7 commercial extraction system, or a high-occupancy building — the energy saving usually pays back the EC motor's extra cost within about two years, after which it keeps saving. For an intermittent bathroom fan, a standard AC motor is perfectly adequate.

Numbers sell EC motors better than adjectives. Here is a realistic calculation for a mid-size commercial inline duct fan moving about 500 m³/h against a typical duct resistance, running continuously:

The EC version costs about US$55 more to buy and saves about US$70 a year — so the premium pays back in roughly nine to ten months, not two years. Over a ten-year service life that single fan saves more than US$600 in electricity alone, before counting the lower heat load it puts on the building's air conditioning. Multiply that by twenty fans in a hotel or office fit-out and the number becomes a line item the client's finance team notices.
Electricity tariffs vary a lot — in Gulf markets with subsidised power the payback stretches to two to three years, while in Europe and parts of Asia at US$0.25/kWh or more it can fall under six months. Send us your local tariff and duty cycle and we will run the real calculation for your project.
Most brochures quote efficiency at full speed, which is where an AC motor looks best. Real ventilation systems rarely run flat out: a fan sized for peak occupancy spends most of its life at 50–70% of maximum.
This is where the gap opens. An AC motor's efficiency falls away steeply as you throttle it — a shaded-pole or triac-controlled AC fan at half speed may still draw 60–70% of full power. An EC motor holds high efficiency right down to about 20% of rated speed, so at half airflow it draws closer to a quarter to a third of full power. That is why the gap in a real 24/7 installation is often far wider than the nameplate comparison suggests.
There is a second, quieter saving: an EC motor converts more of the input energy into airflow and less into heat. In a conditioned space that waste heat becomes cooling load, so you pay for it twice.
EC motors accept a control signal directly, which is what makes them attractive on commercial projects:
Practical note for installers: run the 0–10 V signal in a cable separate from the mains. Induced noise on that pair is the single most common cause of "the fan hunts between speeds" call-backs. Keep signal runs under 50 m where possible, and use screened cable on longer distances.
By contrast, an AC fan is usually controlled by a simple voltage reducer or a triac controller. It works, but the control range is narrow — below roughly 40% of nominal voltage an AC motor will simply stall or hum rather than slow down further — and there is no feedback to confirm the fan is actually running.
