Saudi Arabia is the only 60 Hz market in the Gulf — and the one where a 50 Hz fan fails in the field.
Most exhaust fan enquiries we receive do not mention frequency. They mention voltage, or nothing at all. For every Gulf market except one, that is fine — but the exception is the largest market in the region, and it is the one where a 50 Hz fan will fail in the field. This guide explains what changes at 60 Hz, which countries are affected, and what to put in your purchase order.
Saudi Arabia runs on 60 Hz. Every other Gulf state runs on 50 Hz. A fan built for 50 Hz and installed on a 60 Hz supply does not simply run slightly faster — it runs about 20% faster, demands roughly 1.7 times the shaft power it was designed for, and its motor cannot supply that at the same voltage. The result is overheating, nuisance tripping, and a motor that fails long before its rated life.
If your project is in Saudi Arabia, your purchase order must state 220 V / 60 Hz. A 60 Hz fan uses a different motor build — it is a separate production batch, so it affects both the minimum order quantity and the lead time. Tell us at enquiry stage, not at shipping stage.
An AC induction motor's speed is set by the supply frequency, not by the voltage. Synchronous speed is:
n = 120 × frequency ÷ number of poles
A four-pole motor turns at 1,500 r/min on a 50 Hz supply and 1,800 r/min on 60 Hz. That is a 20% increase — and a fan does not respond to speed in a straight line. The fan affinity laws say:

So the fan asks for roughly 1.7 times the power. Meanwhile, at the same 220 V, the 60 Hz supply gives the motor a lower volts-per-hertz ratio than it was designed for — the magnetic flux in the core falls and the torque the motor can produce drops. The fan wants more power and the motor can deliver less. That gap becomes heat in the windings.
What the installer sees: a fan that runs noticeably faster and louder, a motor casing that gets uncomfortably hot, a thermal protector that trips after a period of running, and eventually a burnt-out winding. Because it works on day one, the fault is usually only discovered months later — after the building is handed over.
You cannot fix this with a voltage regulator or a dimmer. Reducing the voltage reduces torque further and makes the overheating worse. The only correct answer is a motor wound and rated for the supply frequency.
The table below is based on the GCC Standardization Organization's low-voltage electrical equipment regulation (GSO BD-142004-01), which sets the rated voltage and frequency that equipment must be assessed against for Gulf markets.

Two things are worth pulling out of that table. First, only Saudi Arabia is 60 Hz among the GCC states — a fan supplied for Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman or Bahrain is a standard 50 Hz unit. Second, the Gulf is not one voltage: Kuwait, Qatar and Yemen are 240 V systems while the UAE, Oman and Bahrain are 230 V. A motor rated 220 V with a ±10% tolerance covers 198–242 V, so 240 V is inside the band — but confirm it rather than assuming.
The rating plate on the motor states the voltage, frequency, current and speed the motor was designed for. Before installing anything, check three things against the site supply:
If the nameplate says 220 V / 50 Hz and the site supply is 220 V / 60 Hz, stop. The fan is the wrong build for that market.
Because a 60 Hz unit is a different motor batch rather than a stock item, Saudi projects should be planned with a longer window than a Kuwait or UAE project of the same size. The practical steps are to confirm the frequency at enquiry stage, to consolidate all 60 Hz models into one order so the batch is economic, and to avoid adding 60 Hz models to an order after production has started.
Among the Gulf states, only Saudi Arabia. Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Yemen and Iraq all use 50 Hz. Elsewhere, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines, South Korea and Peru are 60 Hz markets.
It will run, but about 20 percent faster and it will demand roughly 1.7 times the shaft power it was designed for. The motor cannot deliver that at the same voltage, so it overheats, trips its thermal protection or fails early. Always specify a motor rated for the supply frequency.
Speed rises by about 20 percent, which increases airflow by about 20 percent and the power required by about 73 percent. The motor casing runs hot, thermal protection may trip, and the winding can burn out. The fault often appears months after installation rather than immediately.
