MOQ — minimum order quantity — is the smallest number of units a factory will produce or ship in a single order. For exhaust fans, a low MOQ is one of the first things importers look for, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains why MOQs exist, what is normal in the ventilation industry, and how to work with them.
Why Factories Have an MOQ
A factory does not simply "have" an MOQ as a policy — it is the result of real production economics:
Setup cost: changing a production line between models takes time, and that time has a cost that must be spread across the batch.
Material purchasing: motors, wire, plastic resin and packaging are bought in minimum lots. A small order still consumes a full material lot.
Quality control: testing and inspection effort per batch is similar whether you order 50 or 500 units.
This is why a factory quoting an unrealistically low MOQ is often a signal that it is not really the factory.

How to Work With an MOQ
Start with a sample: a single-unit sample (freight collect) lets you test before committing to the MOQ.
Mix models in one container: if you need variety rather than volume, combine several models to reach the total.
Choose stock models first: they carry the lowest MOQ and the shortest lead time.
Negotiate on long-term volume: a factory will often lower the MOQ for a buyer who commits to a repeat schedule.
What Raises the MOQ
Custom voltage or frequency (e.g. 60Hz or 110V) — a dedicated motor batch.
Private-label packaging and branding — printing and artwork setup.
A new mould or colour — tooling cost to amortise.
Unusual specifications — anything off the standard configuration.
The more standard the model, the lower the MOQ and the faster the delivery.
