The airflow battle that decides your ducting design, noise level, and long-term running cost.
When ventilation ducting is involved, buyers face a core choice: inline duct fans (also called mixed-flow or in-line fans, mounted inside the duct run) or axial fans (wall or window mounted, moving air along the fan axis). Both move air, but they behave very differently under duct resistance. Choosing wrong means either an underperforming system or paying for pressure capability you never use.
Fans face static pressure from ducts, bends, grilles, and filters. As pressure rises, airflow drops. Axial fans have steep airflow-vs-pressure curves: excellent at near-zero pressure (an open window or short wall opening), but airflow collapses quickly once ducting is added. Inline mixed-flow fans are designed to keep delivering airflow against moderate pressure — that is their entire reason for existing.

An axial fan is a propeller in a short tube. The blades spin around the motor's shaft and push air straight through, parallel to the axis. It is superb at moving large volumes of air in open, low-resistance conditions — and poor at pushing air through a long duct.
An inline duct fan is designed to live inside the duct run. The better ones use a mixed-flow impeller, a hybrid that combines axial-style volume with centrifugal-style pressure generation. Because the assembly is encased in the duct, air enters and leaves in a straight line, so the fan can be tucked into a ceiling void or along a duct run.
The practical difference between the two comes down to one number: static pressure.
Static pressure is the resistance a fan must push against — duct friction, bends, grilles, shutters and filters. Every one of these "steals" airflow.
An axial fan's airflow collapses as soon as resistance appears. A mixed-flow inline fan holds its airflow far better as pressure rises, because its impeller is designed to pressurise air rather than simply shove it. This is why:

Axial fans are exposed, so blade-tip turbulence is audible — usually the loudest option in a living space. Inline fans sit inside the duct, which absorbs a meaningful share of the sound, and mixed-flow impellers are inherently lower-turbulence. If quiet matters, choose an inline fan and match the duct diameter to the fan outlet — undersized ducts add a whistle of their own.

Most value-focused fans use AC motors. For continuous-duty applications — ventilation that runs all day — an EC (electronically commutated) motor uses significantly less energy and runs cooler and quieter. The upfront cost is higher, but for a fan running 24/7 the payback is often under two years. We offer EC-motor versions of our inline duct fans on request.
Every fan has a performance curve — a graph of airflow against pressure. Two numbers matter more than any marketing claim:
The gap between the two is where cheap axial fans fail. A mixed-flow inline fan is built to keep the gap small. When comparing quotations, ask for the airflow at the working pressure of your system, not the free-air figure.
Consider a 20 m² bathroom with a 3-metre ducted ceiling run to an outside soffit. It needs roughly 150 m³/h after duct losses.
Option B costs more to install and is the correct engineering choice. This is the single most common mis-selection we see from buyers in the Gulf and Europe, and it is entirely avoidable with the right comparison.
Yes — typically 1.5–2× once you include the duct, grilles and mounting hardware. The extra cost buys quieter operation and the ability to move air through ducting, which an axial fan cannot do efficiently.
