Wall-mounted units face the weather directly, so they need gravity shutters or butterfly dampers to keep dust and hot air from back-flowing when the fan is off, plus UV-stable external grilles. Ceiling/inline systems keep the fan mechanism indoors where it stays cleaner and cooler, which usually extends service life; the trade-off is that ducts passing through unconditioned roof spaces should be insulated to avoid heat gain.
