An inline duct fan is a fan mounted inside a duct run, so air enters and leaves along a straight line. Unlike a wall or window fan, it can be hidden in a ceiling void or along a duct, and — in its mixed-flow form — it holds its airflow against the pressure of long ducts, bends and grilles. How an Inline Duct Fan Works

An inline duct fan sits inside the duct, so air flows straight through it. The motor drives an impeller — propeller (axial), hybrid (mixed-flow) or backward-curved (centrifugal) — that accelerates air along the duct. Because the fan body is inside the duct, the duct itself absorbs most of the sound, which is why inline fans are the quiet choice for bedrooms and offices. The trade-off is that the fan must overcome the duct's static pressure; a weak axial booster will simply stall under resistance while a mixed-flow or centrifugal unit keeps moving air. How to Size an Inline Duct Fan

Sizing has three steps:

Required CFM = (Room Volume in ft³ × ACH) ÷ 60
or  Required m³/h = Room Volume in m³ × ACH

Worked example: A villa bathroom of 3.5 m × 3 m × 2.7 m = 28.4 m³ at 8 ACH needs 227 m³/h (134 CFM). With a 4 m duct and two bends, add 20% → about 270 m³/h (160 CFM). Choose a mixed-flow inline fan rated above that at the expected static pressure.

Static pressure, explained

Static pressure (Pa) is the resistance in the duct from its length, bends, grilles and filters. A booster axial fan is cheap but collapses past a few Pa; a mixed-flow fan holds airflow to ~30–50 Pa; a centrifugal unit goes higher. Inline fans are quieter than wall or window fans partly because the duct muffles them and partly because mixed-flow impellers are designed for low turbulence. Expect roughly 25–35 dBA for residential units and slightly more for high-pressure commercial models. Match the duct diameter to the fan and use rigid duct to keep levels down. Duct Sizing and Layout Best Practices

The duct is half the system, and getting it wrong wastes a good fan. Follow four rules. Keep it short and straight — every metre of duct and every 90° bend costs you airflow and adds noise; route the fan as close to the outlet as practical. Match diameters — the duct bore should equal the fan spigot; a step-down creates a pressure spike and whistling. Use rigid or semi-rigid duct over flexi-foil, which ripples internally and roughly doubles resistance. Insulate ducts that pass through unconditioned spaces so condensation does not drip and the air stays at temperature. For a typical villa bathroom a 100–125 mm (4–5 inch) rigid run of under 5 m performs best, and you should size the fan from the duct's actual resistance, not just the room volume — a long, complex run needs a higher-Pa unit than the free-air CFM alone suggests.

Inline duct fans run for thousands of hours a year, so the motor choice drives most of the lifetime cost. A standard AC motor is cheap and robust and suits intermittent residential use. An EC (electronically commutated) motor integrates the controller into the motor, runs cooler and modulates speed efficiently, typically cutting energy use by 30–60% at part load — the payback is fastest in 24/7 commercial extraction, plant rooms and hotel corridors. For villas that run a fan for several hours a day, EC pays back within a couple of years.
