An exhaust fan removes stale, humid or contaminated air from a room and discharges it outside. It is the simplest and most cost-effective way to control moisture, odour, heat and indoor air quality — and it is also the most commonly mis-specified piece of ventilation equipment. How Exhaust Fans Work

Every exhaust fan is a simple machine: an electric motor spins an impeller that creates a pressure difference, pulling air from the room and pushing it out through a duct or grille. The room then draws in replacement air through gaps, windows or a dedicated intake, creating continuous ventilation. The difference between fan types comes down to where the impeller sits (in the ceiling, wall, window or duct) and how it handles resistance (static pressure). A fan that moves plenty of air in free air can still fail if it cannot push against a long duct — which is exactly why BAER offers both low-pressure window fans and high-pressure mixed-flow duct fans in one catalogue.

Most buyers start with ceiling or wall fans because they are the cheapest to install, then move to inline or silent models when noise or ducting becomes a factor. How to Choose the Right Exhaust Fan

Four factors decide which fan fits. Get these right and the fan will perform; get any of them wrong and even a good fan will disappoint.

1. Airflow (CFM / m³/h)

Size the fan to the room's volume and the required air changes per hour (ACH), not to floor area. Use our CFM calculator to get the number, then add a 10–20% margin for duct resistance.

2. Static pressure

Ducts, bends and grilles create resistance. A wall axial fan collapses under it; an inline mixed-flow fan holds its airflow. If ducting is involved, choose for pressure, not just airflow.

3. Noise

4. Voltage and frequency

Match the motor to the destination grid: 110V/60Hz for North America, 220–240V/50Hz for Europe and most of the Gulf, and 220V/60Hz for Saudi Arabia.

Sizing Your Exhaust Fan Correctly

Under-sizing is the #1 cause of "my fan doesn't work" complaints. Size to volume and air changes per hour (ACH), never to floor area. A room with a 2.5 m ceiling holds twice the air of one with a 1.25 m ceiling at the same footprint — and you have to move all of it. Use the formula below or the CFM calculator.

Required CFM = (Room Volume in ft³ × ACH) ÷ 60
or  Required m³/h = Room Volume in m³ × ACH

Worked example: A 4 m × 3 m × 2.5 m bathroom = 30 m³. At 8 ACH (typical for bathrooms) that is 240 m³/h, or about 141 CFM. Add 15% for duct and grille resistance and you need a fan rated around 275 m³/h (160 CFM). Understanding static pressure

Static pressure is the resistance the fan must overcome, measured in Pascals (Pa). Every metre of duct, every bend, every grille and every filter adds Pa. A window axial fan may be rated at near-zero Pa; a mixed-flow inline fan is built to hold its airflow at 20–50 Pa and beyond. If your installation has any ducting, choose for pressure, not just free-air CFM — the number on the box is measured with no duct attached, so real-world airflow is always lower. Budget a 10–20% margin and you will not be disappointed.

Motor Types: AC, EC and DC

Exhaust fan motors come in three flavours. AC motors are the workhorse — cheap, robust and available at every voltage we stock. EC (electronically commutated) motors integrate the controller into the motor, run cooler, modulate speed efficiently and cut energy use by 30–60% at part load — ideal for 24/7 commercial extraction. Exhaust Fan vs Inline Duct Fan: Which to Choose

A "standard" exhaust fan mounts on a wall, window or ceiling and pushes air straight out. An inline duct fan sits inside the duct and is the right call when the air has to travel. Rule of thumb: if the outside is directly behind the fan, a wall or window fan is simplest and cheapest; if you need to route extraction through a ceiling void, across a room or to a distant grille, choose inline. The two are complementary, not competing — many villas use a window fan in the kitchen and inline fans in the bathrooms.

What is the difference between a wall and ceiling exhaust fan?
